As I end up this year-long challenge on all things Oscar, I turn to a smaller movie that should have but didn’t end up on the Oscar roster, as often happens: Robert Enders’ 1978 movie Stevie.

The film is about the life of British poet Stevie Smith and centers on Smith’s relationship with her aunt, with whom she lived for many years in a house in Palmers Green, London. Glenda Jackson and Mona Washbourne play the two. Both are excellent, and at the time received plenty of critical love. Jackson received awards from the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle, and Washbourne from the Boston Society of Film Critics, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the National Board of Review, and the New York Film Critics Circle, and was also nominated by the National Society of Film Critics. (Again, how was she not nominated for the Oscar?!) Both also received Golden Globe nominations.

This film is now-forgotten gem, and I am not sure where you can find it. Perhaps Criterion will add it back to their channel some time. Find it if you can!
