Meet the Brother-Sister Team Behind “Sawyer, Kid Lawyer”

Some kids just get it. That’s certainly true in the case of Sawyer, the inquisitive first grader at the center of the children’s book series Sawyer, Kid Lawyer. In Teacher vs. Naptime, the series’ first installment, readers follow the title character as she navigates her first day of school and advocates for a much-needed naptime in her class.

The second Sawyer book, Playground Debate, which debuted May 2025, picks up where Teacher vs. Naptime leaves off, with Sawyer and her classmates facing a dilemma while sharing playground equipment. Sawyer takes it upon herself to arrive at a solution that benefits everyone.

While these lessons are certainly evergreen, the genesis of these stories – which will ultimately form a planned five-book series published by Journal Joy – came from author Shanene Muldrow’s own memories of childhood curiosity. “I wanted to create stories based on questions or situations that I found myself in as a child,” she says. “As I was writing down potential ideas, there were five moments that stood out, which resulted in the formation of the book series.”

But there’s another factor connecting Shanene to her roots. The Sawyer series is actually a family affair for the Muldrows, with Shanene acting as author, and her older brother Sheldon providing the illustrations! The two, both of whom have full-time careers and are active in their individual communities, spent about four years working together to get the first Sawyer book off the ground. Sheldon bases his illustration ideas on the context of the storylines provided by Shanene.

“Individually, we’ve both worked on projects that explore creativity and storytelling in different forms, from short stories to community-based art and educational materials,” Shanene said. “Sawyer, Kid Lawyer is our first major collaboration, and it’s been a wonderful blend of our shared interests – storytelling, education, and inspiring young readers.”

Both siblings agree that at the heart of Sawyer, Kid Lawyer is the message that every voice matters. “We’re trying to convey how most conflicts can be best resolved through communication and compromise,” Sheldon said. “Don’t be afraid to ever speak out and ask questions especially if you feel something doesn’t sit right with you. Also, trust and believe in yourself first and always, no goal is unattainable and you can overcome all challenges.”

We hope readers learn that standing up for what’s right doesn’t require a title or age – it requires courage, empathy, and understanding,” Shanene said. “We also want to encourage curiosity about how rules work and how fairness can be shaped by speaking up and listening to others.”

Both Muldrows are glad they pursued this endeavor together. “The biggest reward has been seeing kids connect with Sawyer, ask thoughtful questions, and feel empowered to speak up for what’s right,” Shanene said. “Knowing that these stories are sparking curiosity and confidence – that’s the true win. Also, collaborating with my brother and creating a legacy project with him has been amazing.”

Sheldon concurred: “The biggest reward from working on these books has been working with my sister.”
